Food, Glorious Food
This is one of our new favorite dishes: Huedapbap. This is a variation on another favorite: Bibimbap, which is made with rice, fresh vegetables, a fried egg and chilie sauce. This one is made with hue, or raw fish, which is again mixed with rice, a lot of fresh lettuce, sesame leaves and other veggies, and a little chilie sauce. We just happened upon this restaurant outside the exit of the Bupyeong Market subway stop in Incheon and it was a great discovery. Do you see all the other amazing things that came with our meal? Fish soup, fried fish, a cabbage salad with raw fish, a quiche-type eggy thing, gimbap roll, and of course various kimchi. All for 6,000 won, or $5!
This was at a simple outdoor restaurant on the cliffs above Jungmoon beach on Jejudo. Not only was the setting amazing, but unlike any restaurant in a remarkable setting in the States, the food was still affordable. Ryan and I got hue (raw fish) and fried fish. Both delicious and served with great sides, as usual (I will miss them so much!) This photo shows you the carcass of the poor fish after we devoured it.
This is actually just one of the side dishes at the pheasant meal we ate on Jejudo, but I wanted to show you another one of the "best things about Korean food" (I hope I'm not wearing that out too much; it's all true). This is pajeon, or Korean pancake, or pizza, or whatever you want to interpret it as. It is made with various flours and egg, I believe, and then differnt veggies or fish or occassionally meat are added and it's all friend up. They are delicious and cheap and often served as a free side dish or are ordered a lot when Koreans go out drinking.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Korea! And it's right next to my work! What luck. This place only have about 8 dishes on its menu--three different mandus (dumplings or potstickers), udong (or udon in Japan), and mumil (fresh buckwheat noodles served in various broths to which you add scallions, shaved radish, vinegar, and spicy mustard). Everything is handmade and fresh to order and you leave feeling like a million dollars.
